The Consumer Organisations’ Research and Information Centre (CRIOC) is a public benefit foundation created in 1975 by the Ministry of Economic Affairs. CRIOC aims to strengthen the consumer organisations in their actions and to present recommendations the public authorities. The seat of the organization is in Brussels.
The Board of Directors of CRIOC consists of representatives of 17 consumer organizations that are officially recognized in Belgium. These organizations are trade unions; family, women or citizen associations, health insurance organizations; etc.
· CRIOC participates in the representation of the consumers, complementary to the consumer organisations. It has mandates in commissions and working groups at the federal level as well as the community, regional and European levels.
· CRIOC carries out any scientific studies, analyses and informative actions about the subjects that are discussed in these commissions and working groups, including their effects on every level of the public decision-making (at the local, regional, community, federal, international levels). Its research department employs a number of experts in the following fields: consumer law and commercial practices, consumer behaviour, sustainable consumption, consumer safety, health (food, medicine, smoking habits), consumer information...
· CRIOC contributes to the permanent information of the consumer organisations and the FPS Economics, SME, Self-employed and Energy by means of its two-weekly electronic magazine and various web sites among other things.
CRIOC answers to the requests for documentation coming from the consumer organisations and the FPS Economy and develops its documentation centre which is open for the public.
The education service is specialized in the information and education of consumers (particularly vulnerable consumers).
